Lose out in a well fought battle against Crewe and Nantwich

Crewe and Nantwich Ladies XV
Vs
Didsbury Toc H Ladies
03/05/2015
Once again Didsbury Toc H history was made by the Ladies team as they played their second ever game and first away fixture, a trip down the M6 to Vagrants Park home of Crewe and Nantwich RUFC.
Coach Jack Reynolds got the team prepared with an effective warm up and the girls were confident going into the kick off. Just before the match was underway there was one of the most interesting pre match referee briefings I have seen where team Captain Hannah Watson managed to Insult the referee twice in quick succession but it was taken in good humour by the referee who to be fair set himself up for the comments.
Didsbury kicked off in great rugby conditions which immediately showed when Crewe scored from the kick off with a great individual effort from Simone Christopher who scored shrugging off 3 tackles before breaking loose and running in a try.
Georgie Perris – Redding scored her first try of the afternoon after some sharp interplay between Claire Waterhouse and EJ Macleod down the right wing. Didsbury managed to get back into play with some individual play from Hannah Watson and Lauren Muddiman and good support from the forwards and forced Crewe to defend desperately before a well taken turnover from Flanker Laura Hollinshead again started a move releasing Georgie Perris – Redding in space to score her second try of the game making the score 19 - 0 to the Home Team.
Didsbury then came back into the game and history made with the Ladies XV first every try scored by Lauren Muddiman who used her strength and power to cross the line to score after some great build up play from both forwards and backs. Hannah Watson kicked the conversion to bring the score to 19-7.
Hannah got herself on the score sheet again this time with a try coming from one of her trade mark dummy passes and staying strong to keep the defenders off her to score and followed up with the conversion.
Half Time was very positive with the score at 19-14 the team felt confident they could create an upset for the home team. Unfortunately Crewe Winger Georgie Perris – Redding had other plans and scored two tries in quick succession build up play for one of the tries coming from Fly Half Pheobe Jay.
Didsbury Then responded with one of the best team tries I’ve seen all season, after some good forwards play Didsbury found themselves about 25 metres out to the right of the posts, scrum half Olivia Westmacott passed out from the break down to Centre Lauren Muddiman who passed to Joss Walton who took the ball forward 10 metres and made a textbook inside pass to Number 8 Rachel Harrison who charged forward another 10 metres taking out 3 players before going to ground, Lauren Muddiman quick to support picked the ball up and charged over the line to the left of the posts again using her strength and power to hold off the defence. Again the reliable boot of Watson converted. Score 29 - 21
Crewe responded again with you guessed it Georgie Perris – Redding scoring another great individual effort. The Crewe kicker unluckily managed to hit the crossbar for the third time in a row which is a feat in itself. Score 34 – 21.
Didsbury responded with a great individual try from Captain Hannah Watson who saw space in behind the Crewe Backline and chipped a perfectly weighted ball through and chased hard under pressure to regain and cross the line to the right hand side of the field about 10 metres in from the touchline. Megan Grant – Harris stepped up to take the conversion as it was more in her range but after a good strike it unfortunately hit the uprights. Score 34 – 26
With both teams tiring but still putting in 100% into the game especially at scrum time with both teams battling hard. As the game flowed into its final stages Crewe and Nantwich Player Georgie Perris – Redding was still threatening and 3 more tries to complete her double hat trick with one of them coming from a fantastic individual effort dodging 4 tackles before out pacing the full back to score under the post with two tries converted the final score was Crew and Nantwich Ladies 48 – Didsbury Toc H Ladies 26.
It was a fantastic display of rugby from both teams who are both newly formed and looking to join the League next season which can only strengthen Women’s Rugby in the Northwest.
The Didsbury players walked of the pitch with their heads held high after a great display of rugby in both the forwards and backs and were always in the game but the thorn in the side was Crewe Player Georgie Perris – Redding who scored seven tries made the difference and is a name to remember for the future.
The team return to the field at home to play a Manchester Barbarians team next Sunday afternoon at Simons Field.
A big day as Didsbury Toc H Juniors have their End of Season Awards that afternoon as well so come down and support the club!!
