It was our first real test of the season with West Park returning to the pitch where they deservedly achieved promotion last season.
With consistently tight games over the years, this was sure to be a competitive game, with the 16-15 final scoreline proving just that.
We were probably on the wrong side of the possession stats for the vast majority of the game so we had to rely heavily on our defence which once again, proved very impressive. The work rate and intensity from the lads was incredible. And despite a couple of well worked, dogged out tries by a spirited West Park side, the coaches were very happy with the defensive performance.
Attacking wise, we can admit that we still have so much more to give. And with that it’s both frustrating that we’re not quite firing on full cylinders but also really encouraging for the coaches knowing what can come. Two really well worked tries, both scored by Alex Mayo, showed what we can do when we put practice into play.
All in all, it was fantastic to start the competitive season with a win vs long time rivals. We now focus on our first league fixture next Saturday vs a newly promoted Warrington side.
We would once again like to reach out to West Park and apologise for the disruptions to your squad and supporters on the day.
