First XV Match Review: Toc H vs. Aldwinians (31-8)

The First XV secured a decisive 31-8 victory at home against Aldwinians, overcoming the logistical concerns posed by Storm Amy. While the storm grounded the Ladies' team's flight to the Isle of Man, playing conditions at Ford Lane were excellent, setting the stage for a compelling contest against opponents who, historically, have proven extremely difficult (with a five-season average score of 18-17).

Aldwinians started the stronger, dominating the opening 20 minutes and keeping Toc H under consistent pressure. They capitalized on this early momentum with a well-taken individual try from their winger—who executed a successful chip-and-chase.A penalty goal quickly followed, establishing an 8-0 lead.

Toc H, however, grew into the game and controlled territory and possession for the remainder of the fixture. This sustained pressure led to five unanswered tries. The first came from forward momentum, with veteran player James Howarth dotting down, following patient pick-and-go phases. Joe Mcpherson converted, narrowing the deficit.
Just before halftime, a well-executed blindside move put Toc H ahead, culminating in winger Tim Byrne scoring under the posts after quick hands created space. Mcpherson's second conversion made the halftime score 14-8.
Toc H carried their momentum into the second half. Following a goal-line drop-out, sustained phase play created an overlap, allowing fly-half Vize to put Tim Byrne over for his second try. The crucial bonus-point try came from captain Tom Andrews, who spotted and exploited a gap in the defence to cross the line.
The fifth and final try was secured late in the game after a powerful carry from back-rower Adam Pollock. Mcpherson successfully added the final conversion, sealing the impressive 31-8 victory.

Player of the Match was awarded to Joe Mcpherson for expertly controlling the tempo and direction of the game from the Number 9 position.
A special mention was also given to back-rower Zak Morton for his tireless work rate throughout the match.

This comprehensive result marks a significant improvement in both performance and scoreline for Toc H, providing great confidence as the squad prepares for the challenging away fixture against Aspull this week.
