Before the game Didsbury, in second, were equal on points with Trafford, lying in third and the close gap in the league was reflected in much of the first half. The home side had much of the better possession and territory for huge swathes of the opening half, but time and again they were thwarted close to the try line. With that amount of pressure Didsbury would have been disappointed with a solitary penalty to show for the first half efforts.
Trafford leveled the scores, 3-3, early in the second half with a penalty kick of their own. The spark that had been missing from Didsbury in the first half started to flicker and the exciting backline started to make clean breaks through the visitors defensive line. Good runs by the huge back three of Southall, Hoare and Rooney sucked in defenders time and again. The constant pressure on the visitors had to tell, and it soon did with Dylan Williams crashing over for the first try of the match. Didsbury continued with the high tempo and stretching the opposition defence. Number 8 James Eames soon increased the lead to 17-3 with a devastating run unchallenged under the posts. Wilder added his second conversion of the day, but was cruelly robbed of a good penalty kick by the linesmen not flagging the kicks success. Toc H clinically closed the game out with substitute Dave Foster finishing off a move to score by the posts. At 22-3 Trafford stuck to their task and were rewarded with a late consolation try.
The victory will help to cement Didsbury's second place in the league, but catching runaway leaders De-La-Salle may be a step too far. Next Saturday Didsbury visit Bury.
