Didsbury Toc H 2s travelled 40 minutes down the road to a Northwich 2s Saturday just gone, looking to prove a much needed point.

The team sheet looked promising with Toc’s newest import from Yorkshire Alec Dewell, the ever Welsh Dan Roberts and VC Luke Collins combining in the front row. Power house Joe Hobbs joined Phil Dodds in the engine room to devastating effect, very much a Jekyll and Hyde affair. The back row saw 3 new changes to the previous match with the Singh brothers taking either flank, while Callum Kirby took the 8 jersey for the first time this season.
Sam Wallace became Benjamin Eaves’ 5th partner at scrum half this season. Last year’s player of the year, Ollie Lamont, moved to 12. Lamont looked to form a link with Joe Bulbeck at 13. Ash Langridge moved to his favoured left wing with George Price taking up the right. Danny Grogan (Level 2 Grass roots coach) took the 15 jersey.
Toc H didn’t start as well as they wanted with Northwich taking an early try courtesy of a pacey outside centre within the first 5 minutes. With the try going unconverted, Toc H decided on a quick counter. Eaves placed a short high ball from the restart for both Dodds and Hobbs to pick a target. The forwards applied the pressure around the break down, this allowed the backs to be as expansive as the pitch would allow. Langridge kept his width and received the ball at his touch line on half way. He managed to make it to the 22 and, at full speed, give a cheeky ball out of the back door to Wallace running a great line. With Lamont in support, the equaliser was secured. 5-5.
Northwich managed another try from Toc H’s old enemy, broken play. Once again, Toc decided the best response was to up the tempo. With Roberts, Hobbs, K.Singh and Kirkby making yards from intelligent play at the break down, Eaves was allowed to receive the ball in space to release his centres. Lamont taking it to the line and Bulbeck adding the pace in space. As the Northwich defence stretched, Hobbs found a gap and crossed over for a try. 10-10. Toc H followed this with a well-received kick off following safe hands from A.Singh. The forwards took a stroll into Northwich’s half and allowed the backs space to exploit. The ball shifted left to right and allowed Price to touch down for his first of the season. 10-15.
The second half seemed to last a life time, Northwich dominated possession in Toc H’s 22 and after 20 minutes of strong defence Northwich managed a try underneath the posts. Converted. 18-15. Northwich decided the pressure that kept Toc H from the ball all through the 2nd half was no longer required. Toc H took this opportunity and worked their way to Northwich’s 22. With 3 minutes left, Toc H relied on a combination of forwards and backs in open play to cross the line. Kirkby claiming his first 5 points. 18-20.
With cool heads, Toc H soaked up any pressure given to secure their first victory. A fantastic match played well by both teams. Thank-you to the hospitality shown post match from Northwich.
Toc H 2’s look to build from this result against Warrington at home next week.
