After a late pitch inspection the game was declared “on” at 10.30 am.

Eager to play after their mid-winter break, Didsbury made the journey down the M6 to Crewe & Nantwich. With a plethora of players available Capt Mass chose the starting 15 which included possibly the oldest pairing at 10 & 12 ever to don the Black and Gold jersey! After leaving the club in the 80’s (already approaching retirement) Ian Ward made his comeback game at inside centre. His teenage opponent openly guffawed as Wardy went through his warm up-routine. Firey Jack, bandages, ankle high boots – a sight indeed. What the opposite number didn’t realise is that Mr Ward always leads with an elbow which resulted in the first scuffle. The referee saw the whole incident and proceeded to send off our number eight who, standing at 6 feet 2 inches and somewhat follicly challenged bears no resemblance to the hirsute 5’8’’ that is Ian Ward. This theme continued throughout the 80 minutes with in all, 3 players carded all of which were the wrong transgressor. Take heed, never offer to stand in line for an identification parade in Cheshire if this ref happens to be the witness!

You’ll notice that the game hasn’t been mentioned too much – to say this was a match low on highlights would be an injustice. Simon Cowell couldn’t make it sound interesting apart from their prop breaking his hand on Andy Reynolds face - I think it’s supposed to be the other way around. Anyway, 3-0 to us at halftime. On came Vicary, Goose et al with defence being very much order of the day. Crewe managed to level the scores and then hallelujah! A game of rugby broke out for 5 minutes. Unfortunately, it was the home side that took advantage and scored out wide to make it 8-3. Didsbury huffed and puffed but couldn’t blow down Crewe’s defence.

The score was probably fair as this was one of the weakest displays from Didsbury and therefore MotM goes to the red haired flanker from the opposition. Don’t tell anyone, but I think he’s played at a higher level! If you’re going to play ringers, make sure you tell your web master to change player status first!
