For their latest match the U16s travelled abroad, well Ruthin in Wales at least!
Although they arrived with a full 15 there was a preponderance of forwards which meant several had to play out of position. The situation was not helped when, due to injuries, Ruthin were only able to field 13. Thus the match was played as 13-a-side.
The travelling supporters – 4 minus dog – were further dismayed when it was learnt that there were no bacon butties! “Cock-up, on the catering front, boyo!”
As for the match it was a rather disjointed affair from Didsbury’s point of view. Several playing in the backs were forwards who had only occasionally, if ever, played in those positions. Nevertheless the main 3 pressed into service – Shearer, Molloy, Tennant - made a good fist of it.
Despite dominating the lineouts and doing well in the scrums the lack of recognised backs told.
Ruthin possessed a pacy set of backs and used them to good advantage to eventually run out as 24-7 winners.
Having said that Didsbury were not completely overwhelmed and although they only got one try courtesy of Andrews (conversion Grogan) they did have some good possession and territory, especially in the second half.
